Recently, with the reveal of Mega Evolution: Phantasmal Flames, we discovered that we're likely to see a Mega Lopunny ex card in that set from its appearance on the promotional art. This will be Lopunny's first appearance on a Mega ex card! It's gotten us thinking, will every Mega Pokemon without a card be receiving one in the near future?
Mega Evolution is the next era of Pokemon TCG following Scarlet & Violet, and will likely feature plenty of new sets. Surely they can include all of the missing megas right? We hope so, but they will likely still prioritise the more popular Pokemon, as well as all of the new additions from Legends ZA. I always thought that Lopunny was a pretty popular mega, but the only cards it's ever received have been shared with Jigglypuff!
Also, earlier in the year we saw that Mega Latias ex will be coming to the Mega Evolution expansion, which will be her first time mega evolving in the TCG while Latios had the spotlight last time back in Roaring Skies. Not featuring both at the same time does make sense in fairness, with how similar (near identical) they look.
Who else is missing?
Along with Lopunny, Heracross also appears on the Phantasmal Flames promotional art basically confirming its mega return, though it already featured back in Furious Fists. Its buggy friend from the forest Pinsir however has never had its mega form printed. A gen 1 Pokemon struggling to be featured? It's crazy isn't it? As a basic stage Pokemon Pinsir could surely be a quick and easy inclusion into a set down the line, perhaps as a colourless card to reflect its new flying typing.
Mega Sableye shares the same issue that Lopunny had, of having printed cards but they're all shared with Tyranitar from Unified Minds. This is another basic stage mega that could sneakily be included at any time in the coming sets, maybe alongside other mischievous Pokemon such as the Mega Malamar that the socials are currently hinting so much towards.
Another scary ghost from Hoenn, Banette hasn't appeared in its mega form at all! Nor has its less scary ghostly friend Mega Medicham. Both are a bit surprising considering how big of a time Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire was for the series, but I guess some Pokemon do have to be left behind for about a decade. Both of these megas are associated with dealing massive physical damage in the games, maybe something that could be reflected when they eventually receive cards. I'd imagine that has Medicham more immediate power while maybe Banette has some trickier conditions to meet.
Finally, there's one of the most beloved Pokemon of all time in all corners of the fandom, who has no good explanation for not appearing in the TCG so far. Actually no it's just Mega Abomasnow. I like Mega Abomasnow, and Abomasnow in general, but a lot of people probably don't care for it. I think its surprising too that it hadn't received a card during X & Y as it does play a decently big part in the games' story. However, don't worry Abomasnow fans, this one is already confirmed to be returning as it featured in the Japanese set Mega Symphonia, maybe meaning that we'll be seeing it in English as early as base set Mega Evolution!
A reminder!
Mega Evolution's base set releases in Europe in a month's time, October 10th, with Phantasmal Flames already confirmed to be soon afterwards. If you're interested in grabbing some of the set's products when they drop, we'll be stocking it all here on TGC Collectables!
